From 10th to 6th.

10. Katy Perry.

10. Katy Perry.

5. E.T. — I don’t know what’s better: the song or its music video. I got to say that E.T. music video’s one of my all-time favorites. I love all that sci-fi, evolving alien queen realness. Back in 2011, this kind of stuff was trending, so no wonder why that’s a hit. Check 03:15 of the music video on YouTube and let me know whether Katy looks like the Brazilian actress Claudia Raia. She sure does!

4. Thinking of You — have you ever cried over your hypothetical husband’s dead body? I certainly have. I remember being in tears cause I always thought of having a military¹ husband, but then he’d suddenly die in war. Thinking of You made my nightmare come true, and both Katy Perry and Matt Dallas delivered that. I felt that pain.

3. Dark Horse — despite of the music video (Ancient Egypt themed), I’m crazy about Dark Horse not only because it’s a damn good song, but also because I used to listen to it while reading J. K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, a lovely gift given to me by two friends of mine back then, as I was going home the longest and dumbest way. Not need to talk about the chorus of the song. Just incredible!

2. Firework — I almost chose this one as my all-time favorite song of hers because I remember how much it helped me in the process of coming out as gay. Although I haven’t actually ever announced that, the kissing boys scene sure did help me to feel like there’s nothing wrong with being gay. Plus, even though I don’t quite listen to it often anymore, I remember that it was one of my top 3 fave songs alongside Rihanna’s S&M and Kesha’s Take It Off back in 2011.

1. Wide Awake — I may have already mentioned that I got this habit of playing songs while reading books. Wide Awake is my favorite of all Katy Perry’s songs because it gave me my magic, dark world fantasy. I remember playing it on repeat as I read Harry Potter. Katheryn stuck in the labyrinth gave me Triwizard Tournament vibes. I did get to read HP and the Goblet of Fire the same time I got obsessed with this song. This remains to actually be one of the oldest songs I still keep listening to regularly.

9. Troye Sivan.

09. Troye Sivan.

5. Ease — Ease hit me hard back to when I was working at my last job. I was so overwhelmed, sick and tired of tiptoeing around and having to deal with such nasty people that all I wanted was to stop that madness and restart everything from the very beginning. Pretty much like when Troye sings “take me back to the basics and the simple life, tell me all of the things that make you feel at ease”.

4. Seventeen — although I consider this one a beautiful song, there’s something disturbing about it (or about my understanding of it): I don’t know if it’s a song about falling in love for the first time or about losing virginity. I prefer receiving this as the first option, so I kind of remember when I first felt emotionally attracted to a guy. I really thought that could be love. It wasn’t love, but still a genuine feeling, specially because I hadn’t been introduced to the dirt of this world back then.

3. What a Heavenly Way to Die — I found this song in early 2019 and I remember listening to it on repeat along the long way to my chemistry course. At that point, all that job dismissal and construction failure mess had already happened, and the only thing I wanted was to stop living, so I could move away from my problems. Plus, when he sings “what a time to be alive”, I get thoughtful about how damn difficult it is to live these days.

2. DKLA — I used to be obsessed with this song. My post talking about not fitting in in the society is somehow related to this song. Despite of Troye’s beautiful voice, I love this song’s lyrics, specially the chorus. Not keeping love around is something I definitely do. I’m seldom able to get people to like me, and it gets worse when it’s about keeping a boyfriend. Random fact: I found this song when I had just started studying English, so I was thrilled when I found out DKLA are the initial letters for Don’t Keep Love Around.

1. Blue — this song reminds me of the feeling I had after I moved on from a bad romance. This gives me totally sad vibes and the feeling that, although I didn’t want to let him go, that was the wisest thing to do. I always listen to it when I feel a chapter of my life is over.

8. Beyoncé.

08. Beyoncé.

5. Best Thing I Never Had — I used to listen to this song thinking about my very first crush. He’s straight and as trashy as the boy Beyoncé shows in the music video. I remember that @izabllx clocked me for having such a bad taste in men when she saw him. Today, he roots for Brazil’s current president, so thank God I didn’t have any chance with him.

4. Drunk In Love — Just as unusual as listening to Katy Perry’s Dark Horse while reading J. K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy, I’ve spent hours listening to Drunk In Love while reading Oliver Bowden’s Assassin’s Creed books. I don’t know why, but no way I could’ve enjoyed those books as much as I did without playing this song. If I ever get to go to Istanbul, I’ll keep this song on repeat for sure.

3. Halo — I mean, who doesn’t enjoy this song? Pickier fans may not enjoy this knowing there are many other better options, but I do love both the song and the music video. Just like Sweet Dreams, it’s something the world needed to be aware of. My favorite part of the music video is when she’s drowning — just as perfect as choosing Michael Ealy as her man.

2. Scared of Lonely — since a friend of mine told me about this song being one of her friendships anthem, I wanted to know whether it was a good song. Then, I got obsessed with it to the point I’d say that was OUR friendship song in place of theirs. Scared of Lonely has once been meaningful to me specially because I wanted to know what real friendship is about and because I kind of got to know a little bit about people’s instinct back to when I hung out with that friend of hers. Those were dangerous times… We could’ve gotten arrested!

1. Pretty Hurts — I remember playing it on repeat on my Nokia N8. Here Beyoncé brings such an important message to us all, specially the ones who’ve suffered from body shaming. “Perfection is the disease of a nation” will always be one of my favorite quotes ever, as well as when she sings that it’s the soul that needs surgery. “Are you happy with yourself?” always makes me thoughtful.

7. Lady Gaga.

07. Lady Gaga.

5. Paparazzi — like Bad Romance, Paparazzi was one of my favorite songs back in 2010/11. This was the time I was in my coming out process, so Lady Gaga meant a lot to me with her art. She was everything the local preacher was against, so no doubt she was doing it right. Quick fact: it took me eons to realize Paparazzi was the prologue of² Telephone. Only in 2018 I noticed that she gets arrested in the 1st video to then be released by Beyoncé in the 2nd one.

4. The Edge of Glory — I got crazy about this song after RPDR S11 finale. At the time, I was applying for a job position at Roche and I was doing really great. Before the final interview, I was totally feeling my oats and thinking that I could get the job cause there wasn’t a better option than choosing me as an intern. I was at the edge of glory and hanging on a moment of truth. Unfortunately, the odds weren’t in my favor that day.

3. Bad Romance — like Telephone, Alejandro and many other early-decade Lady Gaga songs, Bad Romance was fundamental for me to get rid of pretending I wasn’t gay. Back to 2010, preconception said a boy was a 100% gay if he listened to Bad Romance. Rough times, we used to believe she was an Illuminati who sold her soul to the Devil. Funny fact is that I got caught in only³ bad romances.

2. Bloody Mary — this song is one of the anthems I used to listen to alongside Lana Del Rey’s Love and Rihanna’s Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary back to when I passed a college entrance exam and went studying at UFRJ. Like lately, I was friendly and open to meet new people back to the beginning of 2017. I was amazed that I could go all the way in to the greatest Brazilian university.

1. G.U.Y. — by far, my favorite Lady Gaga song. The music video is nothing but a masterpiece, since it’s Greco-Roman themed. I totally link it to The Hunger Games trilogy. I first listened to it when I was taking a preparatory course at UFRJ, so I felt the fantasy of being approved while listening to this song. I was also amazed because of the resurrecting kings: Jesus Christ and Michael Jackson. Pretty much like Edo Tensei from Naruto series.

6. Linkin Park.

06. Linkin Park.

05. Waiting For The End — I remember I used to listen to it on Multishow while getting ready for school. Besides being one of the many beyond beautiful songs sung by Chester Bennington, its lyrics are really deep. My favorite part is when he sings “so many things were left unsaid”. This apply to me, since I’m someone who’d rather not communicate and quickly jump into conclusions, not expressing them and then somehow starting a huge problem with someone.

04. I’ll Be Gone (Vice Remix) — I’m not much for remixes, but this one really gives me life. This song takes me back to 2016/17 when I used to go to Rio’s downtown for a drink with, at that time, really enjoyable people. I thought I was about to date my friend’s half-brother, and that totally made sense with my fantasy. But now, I’ve got to thank God, since not only do I not get along with my friend, that boy is also conservative, so…

03. New Divide — I guess I fell in love with this song when I read “Allegiant”. At the very end of the book, everything happens rather quickly and goes to a climax point (which got intensified by “New Divide”). I did anxiously read that in one week, which is pretty impressive for me who doesn’t read at all nowadays.

02. Burn It Down — probably one of my all time favorite songs. This song was firstly suggested to me by a guy I had a crush on (the same I wrote about on my post for Nickelback). Besides being a song I used to relate to him, I’m used to feeling like having everything brought down by fire, just like a low version of Daenerys Targaryen. Some would say what I actually want is to get metaphorically burnt down and to reborn as a greater being, but that’s a discussion for another day.

01. Leave Out All The Rest — let’s be honest here: even though The Twilight Saga is said to be not that good, its soundtrack is dope as hell, as they’ve got “LOATR” and Paramore’s “Decode” as parts of it. I get really thoughtful when he sings about “leaving behind some reasons to be missed”. That’s what I used to want in a relationship. To have a deep harmful⁴ or delightful memory in my partner’s life. To leave reasons to be missed.

8. Beyoncé. December 28th, 2019.
7. Lady Gaga. December 28th, 2019.
6. Linkin Park. July 1st, 2020.

  1. Fun fact: I am now a military myself!
  2. "prologue to" instead of "prologue of". It just shows that even though I might have never studied anything about the usage of this term in a sentence, I learned so by listening to English speakers.
  3. "only in" instead of "in only", right?
  4. I’ve got Scorpio as my rising sign, and it shows!
